RMBS - Steven Eirich

All you ever hear from older students is to get involved. They could not be more right! RMBS is the most fun I have ever had on a reading break bar none. We had the pleasure of being put up by Nadia (RMBS VP of PR) and her lovely family. The first night in Edmonton included an awesome homemade dinner, meeting the other billets that would be staying with us from Ryerson University, and a couple drinks at the Billiards Club! The Jasper Park Lodge (JPL) is like nothing I've ever experienced before... Full Post

JMSM 2012 - Sarah Novak

The John Molson Sports Marketing Conference was a great opportunity for me to explore both my business and athletic interests, while meeting amazing students from other University's across Canada. The conference was hosted by the John Molson School of Business at Concordia University. There were a lot of informative and inspirational speakers at the conference, with some of my favourite being: Justin Kingsley from SID LEE, Nancy Broden from Twitter, Ian Clarke from the MLSE, Dan Quinn from NFL Canada, Jonathan Chang from NBA Canada, Len Rhodes from the Edmonton Eskimos, Kevin Gilmore from the Montreal Canadiens, Sammy Choi from the NFL, Julien BriseBois from the Tampa Bay Lightning, and finally, Cabbie Richards from TSN... Net Impact 2012 - Kyle Gingras

From October 25-27, 2012 I was privileged enough to have been selected to go to Baltimore to attend the Net Impact Conference. Not only did I feel privileged on being selected, but also felt privileged on representing the Paul J. Hill School of Business as a whole. This year it was Net Impact’s 20th year anniversary, in which the theme was all about accelerating your impact on business and how to build a business that is sustainable in today’s market. Net Impact is the leading global nonprofit that inspires a new generation to work on building a business for a sustainable future... Full Post

National Mining Competition - Mitch Clarke

At the start of November, I had the privilege of participating in the National Mining Competition in Saskatoon. The idea of the competition was for students to have a 36 hour time period to break down a business case. We were then to present our solution to the judges in a preliminary round, followed by a final presentation round of the top three teams.   We had the opportunity to meet and interview over a dozen industry professionals regarding topics ranging from labour pools in our economy, to CSR, to the financing of multibillion dollar mining companies... National Mining Competition - Kirk Morrison

A few weeks ago, Mitch Clarke, Tom Reimer and I had the opportunity to represent the University of Regina at the National Mining Competition in Saskatoon. This Business Strategy competition provided great insight to many different aspects of the mining industry.  The competition brought in industry experts from a variety of different companies including K+S Potash, BHP Billiton, Claude Resources and Cameco.  We attended an information session where we were able to work one on one with these experts who provided an incredible amount of insight that we were able to use in our presentation, which was based around a theoretical resource that mirrored many characteristics of Uranium... Net Impact 2012- Jeanna Kozan

What an amazing experience. I honestly don't even know where to start! Seeing that we were part of a student body of 2,800 people was when the excitement really started to sink in. The conference was kicked off with a keynote from Wendy Kopp, CEO and Founder of Teach for America. It was so amazing to see the success she had all because she took anew approach to teaching and she ran with it. With a conference of this size we were able to meet a ton of people from all over North America and we were able to see many different views on everyday business encounters... Full Post

Nick Faye’s Guide to Welcome Week - Nick Faye

Hey students! I hope that everyone got a chance to go on some great summer adventures, and that you are all pumped for another semester of school! In my 5 years of University thus far, I’ve experienced my fair share of Welcome Weeks. Hot weather, cute females in summer clothes (or males, depending on your preference), cold beverages, no homework, fun activities… Simply put, it’s the best. I’m actually getting excited about it just sitting here writing this blog. Welcome Week might be my favourite time of the year, and it should be yours as well... Full Post

TRMC 2012 - Tyler Campbell

Before entering my fourth year at the Paul J. Hill School of Business I made a commitment to myself. I would become as active and involved as possible, in order to fully realize the enjoyment that university life has to provide. After joining the Business Students’ Society and the JDC West team I realized there was one last thing to experience: a conference. After closely examining the many conferences available to me, I decided that the Ted Roger’s Management Conference would best suit my interests and prepare me for future endeavors... Full Post

February break was just around the corner and I had one thought in mind, I needed a vacation. I had never been on a conference before and I had always heard that it was something you had to experience during your university career, so I decided to apply for the Rocky Mountain Business Seminar. Going into it, I didn’t know what to expect but I knew that it was going to be a great time. My Reading Week 2012 - Steven Perlinger

Well given that 2012 is to be my final year as a Hill student, I decided that I should try and attend at least one conference before I graduate. So this reading week break while my friends were off on all expenses trips to Mexico, or up in a ski in ski out chalet somewhere, I decided I would "write-off’’ my final spring break, and take the opportunity to learn and network at the Rocky Mountain Business Seminar. If nothing else I hoped to come back with a few new contacts, and maybe even a couple of good memories... Full Post

Voyage to Victoria: UVLC 2012 - Taylor Mountain

I was very excited when I found out that I was chosen to attend the University of Victoria Leadership Conference. I didn’t really know what to expect, but with the short notice we received, my thoughts quickly turned to trying to find clothing for the many formal events at the conference and making sure that I was caught up on my homework. I met up with the rest of our group, and soon the flights were booked. Of course, I knew that we were travelling across the country, but I was so busy getting ready for the trip that it did not really sink in until I looked out the window of the plane and saw... UVLC 2012 - Andrew Braun

What is the appeal to travelling and meeting new people? Would it be the rush of the airports, the $20 airport food, sense of adventure, jumping into a scenario with unknown expectations, or even just meeting more likeminded people around the country? For me, it definitely is not the $20 egg salad airport sandwich or the airport rush, but the joy of meeting new students from various universities around Canada. On February 2nd the flight out to Victoria, BC took off around noon and later that afternoon we walked out to a sunny, green, and warm (relative to our mild Saskatchewan winter) Victoria... Full Post

UVLC 2012 - Celine Raisbeck

I attended UVLC at the beginning of February and it was AWESOME! First of all the food in Victoria is delicious and every single business banquet/gala/event had really good food. The conference had many things planned such as business banquets, leadership sessions, theme nights and the famous Victoria Challenge! The Challenge was similar to the Amazing Race where we had to eat funny things, race around the city, row boats in the harbour and other crazy things. The speakers and sessions were very inspirational as well including guest speaker Adam Kreek, Canadian Olympic Gold Medalist... Full Post

JDC West - A business competition through the eyes of a student (Part 2 of 2) - Nick Faye

Photo courtesy of the University of Regina Photography Department. Sunday “Nothing like a Hall N Oates dance party to wake you up at 4:30 AM! Debate playoffs today! #BeItResolved #Crushin #JDCWest” So we did in fact have a Hall and Oates dance party at 4:30 AM. I was pushing hard for “You Make My Dreams Come True” to be our team’s song at gala (every team gets to pick a song to walk up to accept their award to). We faced UBC in debate playoffs at some absurd time. It was a hard fought battle, but unfortunately we were not victorious... Full Post

JDC West - A business competition through the eyes of a student (Part 1 of 2) - Nick Faye

So if any of you have been following local social/regular media outlets lately, some of you might have noticed all of the “JDC West” commotion. For those of you that aren’t aware, JDC West is a three day competition that is a collection of debate, sport, social and participation based challenges as well as ten business case competitions. Eleven business schools from across Western Canada (including premiere schools such as the University of British Columbia and the University of Alberta) converged on Edmonton this January and received points based on the criteria I mentioned above... Q'BET 2011 - Nathan Duerksen

I am going to preface this by bluntly saying that the Queen’s Conference on the Business Environment Today was one of the single greatest experiences of my university career. In turn, one of my biggest regrets of my entire university life is that I didn’t take the opportunities to go on more conferences. The words that follow do not do the entire conference the sweet, sweet justice it deserves. Every minute detail of the conference was fantastic, and the only thing to complain about was the hangovers that seemed to accompany each evening of events... Full Post

Let me set the stage. You’re just starting your last semester of university life as you know it. After spending the first two years staying as far away from the university as you could, besides going to class of course, you finally realized that you were missing out. You told yourself that in order to really get the university experience you were going to get involved, meet new people, and try new things. Reflecting on your final two years you were happy. You had really gotten involved, met so many people who were now extremely close friends, and tested yourself to really find out what you were made of... Full Post

Nick Faye's Guide to Studying/Procrastination

So midterms have come and gone, the geese have flown South and the snow has devoured our fair city. Tricks and/or treats are done and the neighbours have put their Christmas lights up. Yes students, I’m sure you all know what that means. FINALS are on the horizon. In just a few short weeks, the University of Regina’s finest will be buckling down and preparing to slay Scanton sheets (those stupid multiple choice questions are already haunting my dreams at night). As if we were in a scene from the movie Planes, Trains, & Automobiles. The journey alone to Kingston, Ontario was quite an adventure. Kelly, Kurtis, Nathan and I started our journey with a bright and early flight to Toronto at 5:30 in the morning – a good introduction to the lack of sleep the entire weekend was going to be. Once arriving in Toronto, we took a train the rest of the way to Kingston – this part was really exciting to me because I’ve never been on a train, and the entirety of the ride was alongside Lake Ontario, which is more like an ocean when compared to Wascana Lake... QBET: Three Exciting and Insightful Days in Kingston - Nick Faye

Last November, myself and two other Hill School of Business students had the privilege of attending QBET 2010 in Kingston, ON. Before applying, I had to admit that I was on the fence about the conference. Seeing as many of my friends were talking up other conferences in bigger centres like Montreal or Victoria, I found myself asking why I would want to go to Kingston for three days? The John Molson Sports Marketing Conference was, without a doubt, one of the most amazing experiences of my university career. Hosted by the John Molson School of Business at Concordia University, located in the heart of downtown Montreal, this conference is an opportunity to gain exposure to the world of sports marketing in North America. We heard from such speakers as: Ray Lalonde, who at the time was the Vice President and Chief Marketing and Sales Officer of the Montreal Canadiens, now President and CEO of the Montreal Alouettes  Pamela Browner White, who at the time was the Vice President of Public Affairs and Government Relations of the Philadelphia Eagles, now the Vice President of Public Affairs for the Cancer Treatment Centres of America  Larry Smith, who at the time was the President and CEO of the Montreal Alouettes, ex-Commissioner of the Canadian Football League, now focusing on his political career And many more!
